Visit London’s hidden island inhabited only by artists

For two weekends this summer, you can visit the mysterious Eel Pie Island: a secretive community of artists rarely open to the public. The island sits in the middle of the River Thames in Twickenham and is only connected to the surrounding area by a singular footbridge.

It’s had a long history – notably, it was the site of the Victorian-era Eel Pie Island Hotel which turned into a rock ‘n’ roll hotspot in the 1960s and early 1970s before it burned down – and is now home to a ‘bohemian quarter’ full of artists and their eccentric work.

The island only welcomes visitors twice a year; this June and July guests can explore the area for free, visit the local artists and purchase their work. You don’t need to book a slot, just cross the footbridge to enter.
