Music Hall of Williamsburg Quietly Sold to Developer

If Music Hall of Williamsburg closes at the end of this year, it won’t purely be a result of its lease ending, as its promoter and operator, Bowery Presents, suggested in a letter to employees last month.

Turns out, Asana Partners, the company that owned Music Hall’s building at 66 North 6th Street, offloaded the property to local developer Michael Weitzman for $14 million, taking a hit of over 10% on the historic 10,000-square-foot structure they picked up for $15.9 million in 2019, according to Crain’s. Asana’s deal with Weitzman closed on December 11 (a week before Bowery’s internal letter went out), per a deed that appeared in the city registry last week, but the developer had reportedly been in contact with the building’s owners since as early as September of last year, and has yet to offer any clues about what the future may hold for the 650-capacity venue.

66 North 6th joins a number of North Brooklyn properties in Weitzman’s portfolio, including offices and apartment buildings along Wythe Avenue and the Polonaise Terrace in Greenpoint, where he plans to build a 35-unit mixed-use. The former wedding venue and event space is landmarked, barring any construction from tampering with the building’s original framework. Music Hall of Williamsburg, even with its tiered seating, balconies, glass bricks in the entrance, and monster of a marquee, has no such designation from the city. So, if a call is, at some point, made on what to do with 66 North 6th, which has operated as a music venue since 2001 (six years before it was tucked under Bowery’s banner), the developer will face far fewer restrictions.

Its post-2026 outlook is murkier than ever, but the venue still has a grip of shows in the books for this year, including performances from Westerman, Whitney, Natalie Bergman, and a recently announced set from Armand Hammer. Tickets are available via Bowery. Buyers should probably exercise some caution, though. We’re not at Mirage levels of mismanagement just yet, but who knows what happens to these shows if Weitzman chooses to pull the plug early, or how easy it will be to get a refund.
