London can be spenny but there are ways to eat at some of the best restaurants in town for less
That’s why we look for loopholes where cheap eats (and a cheap night out in London) can be found, and a good value set menu is actually not too hard to come by. Restaurants across the city (including some of our all-time favourites) have dedicated menus of two or more courses that’ll set you back a whole lot less than standard – but will blow you away just as much.
Rambutan
Borough Market’s acclaimed Sri Lankan spot Rambutan has a major feasting menu on offer, which gives diners a generous selection of their best dishes for £38 per head. Expect to see the likes of alphonso mango acharu; buttermilk fried chicken, pol sambol & butter toast; black pork belly dry curry; beetroot curry with toasted urid; white cod sodhi with purple star tomatoes; parsley, lime & fresh coconut sambol; white samba rice; and butter roti. The best part? It’s available every day, for lunch AND dinner, so you don’t need to worry about booking in for a specific time.

Muse by Tom Aikens
Muse by Tom Aikens is a gorgeous restaurant that’s well worth a visit for a special occasion but now there’s a way to eat at the Michelin star spot without stretching the budget too far. The restaurant’s set lunch menu is billed as three courses for £50 but you really get serious bang for your buck. Firstly it’s more like four courses as you start with a basket of freshly baked sourdough and three different butters, before moving into dishes like ‘Full of beans’ (beans, peach and almond), ‘One of my favourites’ (lamb, sheep’s yoghurt and courgette) and ‘Far too tempting’ (pineapple, citrus and tarragon), and you get a little bonus petit fours at the end too. The cooking is faultless and if you’re sat up at the counter, you can get up close to the action too.
