1 Undershaft has been given the green light by the City of London Corporation
The Shard currently holds the title of the UK’s tallest building but it’ll only have it outright for another few years as a new skyscraper, standing at the exact same height of 309.6 metres (the maximum height allowed by the civil aviation authority), will be coming to the City in 2030. 1 Undershaft, which will be built on the site of the Aviva Tower (once that’s demolished) between the Gherkin and the Cheesegrater, will be the tallest building in the Square Mile and the joint tallest in the UK.
The 74-storey building will mostly consist of offices but there will be a public garden on the 11th floor, a viewing gallery that will be the highest publicly accessible one in Europe (so higher than The Shard’s), and an educational space and “classroom in the sky” curated by the Museum of London. There’ll also be a large screen installed on street level on St Helen’s Square to showcase sports events and display public information.
Speaking about the building, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Planning and Transportation Committee, Shravan Joshi, said: “1 Undershaft is a truly remarkable building that will not only help to deliver on the demands for economic growth, through the high-quality office space it offers, but also contribute to the City’s growing cultural offer and tourist appeal.”
