The treatment is inspired by the condition of experiencing multiple senses at once
Synaesthesia, where the stimulation of one sense leads to an involuntary experience in another sense – like seeing colour when you hear music or tasting flavours when you see certain shapes – is a condition that only around 2% – 4% of the population have. LUSH is helping you get a feel for what having synaesthesia is like, at least for 80 minutes, with this signature full body massage.
Designed to stimulate all your senses, the Synaesthesia treatment starts with some intention setting in the LUSH Spa kitchen. You select a word from the chalkboard, which corresponds to an exclusive scent – I chose ‘nourished’, which turned out to smell sweet with notes of citrus. You also pick a tonic from an assortment of bottles, ranging in size and colour and each associated with another word, and I picked a large purple bottle tagged ‘rising’.
Once you’re inside the room, your intention and your tonic get activated, filling the space with their scent and setting you up for relaxation. There’s soft lighting that gently changes colour and there’s also a soundtrack featuring birdsong, orchestral compositions and English folk music that plays throughout the treatment.
The massage is choreographed to the music, with the therapist moving from the scalp down to the arms and legs using medium pressure. You then have the choice of a stomach massage or the placing of hot stones on your chest and abdomen (which has the same comforting feeling as being tucked under a weighted blanket) before a massage on your back and shoulders. The product used is in a bar form, so your skin is still softened thanks to the shea butter, but you’re not left all slippery from oil (or with greasy hair), which is ideal if you have somewhere to go post-spa.

Any massage that goes longer than an hour always feels indulgent but the soundtrack, scents and shifting light all work in combination to make the Synaesthesia treatment extra blissful.
