Georgia man kills wife, girlfriend in double murder-suicide

A Georgia man shot and killed his wife before traveling to his girlfriend’s home, where he fatally shot her and then turned the gun on himself, authorities said Saturday.

The suspected case of double murder-suicide happened earlier this week in Dalton, a city in northwestern Georgia located some 30 miles south of the Tennessee border.

On Friday, Dalton police responded to a call to perform a welfare check at an apartment on Murray Avenue after co-workers of the first victim reported she hadn’t been seen or heard from in several days, officials said in a news release.

Officers were let into the residence by employees of the apartment complex and found the body of a woman with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Detectives immediately launched an investigation and found surveillance video showing a male suspect leaving the apartment around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

After tracking down the vehicle to a different apartment complex on Shadow Lane, detectives went to the location to continue their investigation.

In the early hours of Saturday, while detectives waited for a search warrant to get into the apartment, a man arrived at the scene and entered the residence using a key. He then went back outside and called 911 to report he had found his daughter and another man shot to death.

The 911 caller, officials later learned, was the father of the second victim. He had gone to the apartment to check on her after not hearing from her in days.

Investigators concluded that the suspect appeared to have shot and killed both women before turning the gun on himself.

As of Saturday afternoon, police said the names of the suspect and victims had not been released pending family notification. The investigation is ongoing.
