The man killed in a driver’s alleged high-speed crash coming off a New York City bridge was an avid cyclist and died “doing something he loved,” his family said Sunday.
Kevin Cruickshank, 55, was riding his bike through Chinatown Saturday morning when police said the driver of a Chevy Malibu struck and killed the Morningside Heights man and a 63-year-old woman sitting on a bench. She was later identified by police as 63-year-old May Kwok of Brooklyn.
Witnesses described watching the car race off the bridge at a high rate of speed before the driver lost control, crashing into both victims, as well as an NYPD van that was knocked into a nearby jewelry store.
The driver and a passenger tried to flee on foot, according to police, but were stopped about a block away.
Cruickshank’s family said the 55-year-old could often be spotted in his neighborhood returning from a long bike ride. “It’s devastating to know he was killed doing something he loved.”
“It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that dear friend, neighbor, loving son and husband Kevin Cruickshank has been killed. Kevin was a regular fixture in the neighborhood, known for his warm, welcoming spirit and love of helping his friends and neighbors,” his family said through a spokesperson.

Police said the driver and passenger, inside the Chevy, left the scene but were taken into custody about a block away. Both women are in their early 20s, according to police.
“They got to put up Jersey barriers or some kind of a permanent barrier there to keep people safe,” Karlin Chan said.
Almost 24 hours later, a second violent crash occurred at the same Manhattan intersection. Police said a driver came careening into a food truck and TD Bank around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.
The operator of the food truck had to be transported to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
