A New York State Police sergeant has been arrested on child sex exploitation-related counts after allegedly recording two children in his bathroom as well as possessing thousands of child porn images and videos, according to the FBI.
Federal prosecutors charged Steven Calderon of Orange County on Thursday and was ordered held after he appeared in federal court in White Plains. Prosecutors released his photo (above) and say there may be other alleged child victims out there.
The FBI discovered the alleged stash of child pornography after searching the 43-year-old’s electronic devices in connection with an unrelated assault case. Prosecutors said his alleged victims include a 10-year-old girl who was filmed getting undressed in July 2026. Another 9-year-old child was allegedly filmed in 2023. Investigators said he then secretly recorded them and posted explicit images.
“These alleged acts are a profound betrayal of the public trust and the oath he swore to uphold,” said U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald.
Calderon, who has been a sergeant with the state police since 2022, faces two counts of sexual exploitation of a child and one count of possessing child pornography. He could face up to 80 years in prison if convicted.
“This case should serve as a warning: no badge, title, or position will shield those who prey upon children and justice will find you,” said FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Barnacle.
Calderon lives in Crawford and worked at the Middletown state police barracks. His previous assault arrest on Oct. 25 was in connection with a domestic violence allegation, in which he was charged with second- and third degree assault.
When reached for comment, an attorney for Calderon did not wish to make a statement regarding the charges against his client.
