A Fifth Avenue co-op once owned by Hollywood legends Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward just sold for 40 percent above its asking price following a bidding war. As first reported by the Wall Street Journal, the classic six sold for roughly $14 million after it was listed for $9,950,000 in December. More than 50 prospective buyers toured the home, resulting in nearly a dozen offers, including one above $14 million that the Newman family declined because the buyer intended to use it as a pied-a-terre—something the co-op board was unlikely to approve.

The expansive residence sits within a building designed by J.E.R. Carpenter in 1925 and is wrapped by nearly 2,000 square feet of terrace space.
Entry is through a private elevator that opens into a grand foyer, followed by a sun-filled great room. This living and entertainment space is highlighted by a wood-burning fireplace and a built-in bar.
Stunning Central Park views complement the room’s pre-war architecture, and tall glass doors open onto a sprawling terrace.

A spacious eat-in kitchen with a windowed butlers’ pantry also provides access to the terrace for dining outdoors. A formal dining room, staff room, and laundry room offer options for both entertaining and daily living.

The large primary suite features two oversized walk-in closets and a private wrap terrace with city views from three exposures. Adjacent to the foyer is a second bedroom, which can also be used as a central library.
Newman purchased the property in the 1980s and made it their pied-à-terre for decades to follow. The couple reconfigured the original two-bedroom layout into a spacious one-bedroom, according to the New York Post. Newman died in 2008 at age 83; Woodward, now 95, lives in Connecticut.

In December, Clea Newman Soderlund, the couple’s youngest daughter, told the New York Times the terraces once hosted cocktail and dinner parties attended by Tom Cruise, Cher, and Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
The pet-friendly full-service co-op features a 24-hour doorman, a live-in resident manager, a fitness center, and a bike room.
The buyers, a finance couple represented by Douglas Elliman agents Noble Black and Jennifer Stillman, remain undisclosed.
