We review Legado, the new Shoreditch spot from Nieves Barragan

Nieves Barragán’s new restaurant, Legado, has now finally opened in Shoreditch, right next door to another restaurant you might have heard a bit about – Singburi

Unlike its neighbour, Legado is actually pretty huge inside, with a bar, The Taberna, at the front, opening out into a double-height room, with a sloping glass ceiling, open kitchen and two large seating areas. Nieves herself had a big hand in the design, bringing in touches like Catalan floor tiles and the decorative iron railings leading up to the mezzanine level.

Eat This

From the design to the food, Legado is a very personal project for Nieves, with the menu based on her memories of the dishes she grew up with. Whereas Sabor is a bit more classical, at Legado you’ll find lots more unusual dishes.

It’s a big menu so you’d need to come in a group, or several times, to really get stuck into everything that’s on offer here. There’s a ‘To Start’ section listing several little snacks, and from there the menu is divided into six areas, each with around seven dishes in. There’s ‘Fish and Seafood’, Poultry; ‘Vegetables’; and even a section dedicated to suckling pig and Iberico pork.

From the snacks we enjoyed the scallop, served in a herby vinaigrette almost ceviche-style; the oblong of golden buttery brioche topped with soft smoked cheese and Cantabrian anchovy; and the ‘Quisquillas’, raw blue prawns with crispy fried heads.

We also tried the lamb neck empanadilla, which came with a lovely little pot of rich gravy for dipping; the chargrilled leeks escabeche; and the oozing skate wing tortilla with mojo verde. Must order of the night had to be the ‘Arroz Campero, Lagarto Señorio de Montanera’, a beautiful rich mushroom rice topped with slices of chargrilled Iberico pork.

Finally to dessert, where we still managed two of the nine on offer: churros, of course, which came with a dulce de leche dipping sauce, and an apple empanada – like a very high class apple pie.

And on top of all this, The Taberna bar actually has its own separate menu of small plates, ranging from glidas and ham croquettes to an ox tongue burger. We’ll be back for a vermouth and some of those snacks very soon.

Drink This

There’s a nice line up of seasonal 3-sip serve cocktails at the top of the menu, all for £6. We tried the peach and vermut and the rhubarb and bonanto, both a nice refreshing start. The wine list covers the whole of Spain, from the very north all the way down to the Canary Islands, and there’s a decent by the glass selection too. We had a classic Txakoli and great red ‘MENCIA, Valtuille, Castro Ventosa’.

Why Go

Fans of Sabor and of Spanish food in general will definitely want to check out Legado. It’s a lovely space and it’s great to see some more unusual dishes on offer. We have a feeling that the bar, with its outside space, will become very popular once spring and summer comes around next year too.
