A flight bound for Dallas from Madrid made an unexpected diversion Tuesday when the crew learned that the majority of bathrooms on board the aircraft were out of order.
The scheduled 10-hour American Airlines flight instead veered off to JFK Airport in New York after six of the plane’s eight bathrooms went out of commission.
“We have only two potties operating on board,” the pilot radioed over to an air traffic controller.
“You said only two potties, is that right?” the air traffic controller replied.
“That’s affirmative,” the pilot radioed back.
The FAA confirmed to The New York Times that the “inadequate number of operational lavatories” prompted the decision to divert the plane. After landing for several hours, the plane continued to its final destination of Dallas, Texas.
