Every November the EFG London Jazz Festival spends ten days all over the city, and it always opens in the same place. Jazz Voice is the opening gala at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. Arranger and conductor Guy Barker leads the EFG London Jazz Festival Orchestra, and a run of singers take the mic one after another. It’s the most dressed-up night of the festival.
This year’s soloists are Laura Mvula, Lizz Wright, Emma Smith, Tilda Maplestone, Marvin Muoneké, Liv Warfield, Rita Wilson and James Emmanuel, with Jumoké Fashola hosting. That’s a lot of voice for one evening, and the orchestra behind them is the kind you rarely hear at this size.
It’s also a good way into everything that follows. This is the festival’s 34th edition. It runs until 22 November across more than 70 venues, from small clubs to the Barbican. Samara Joy, Goldie, Melody Gardot and Morcheeba are on the bill, along with a run of shows marking 100 years since the births of John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
