New wine bar Conviviale is coming to Newington Green, taking over the former Vins site right next to Canonbury station. The neighbourhood bar and buvette is influenced by the Canadian heritage of founder, Cat Barry, who wants to bring the energy and multilingualism of her home town Montréal to London.
Cat quit her corporate job over two years ago and has used the time since to explore her love of food and drink. This included a stint working as a cheesemonger and hosting a series of wine and cheese pop-ups at Brunch On The Hill in Crouch End. Now, she’s drawing on this experience to open Conviviale, her first permanent spot, where she’ll be serving a menu of heartwarming dishes made with high-quality produce from her favourite suppliers.
We can expect classic wine bar fare like cheeseboards and charcuterie, plus other Québécois-inspired surprises (we hear poutine is definitely on the agenda). Canada has also influenced the bar’s interiors and Cat has worked with architects Studio KKD to design a space inspired by the nature and seasons of Montréal. Bookings are available, but there will also be an area reserved for walk-ins.
Conviviale is the latest addition to Newington Green’s vibey food and drink scene. It joins other wine bars like Cadet – set up by wine importers Beattie & Roberts with charcutier George Jephson – and The Golden Tooth pub, where the cracking wine list is 80% English.
The bar is due to open in October and while there is no fixed date yet, Cat is planning a few preview events for anyone who is extra keen – or curious. The first will coincide with the Shoreditch Half Marathon this Sunday, where Cat will be serving her take on Montréal steamies and chilled red. Forget running, pass us a hot dog.
