This second episode helped me answer a total of two questions out of the fifty odd that I had from the first episode. The only two answers that I got were that Jack never actually died; he just went UC, so they had to say that he had died, and to be fair, that helped me make a lot more sense of what actually happened, but it still left me with many more questions.
The other question I got answered was that Logan was definitely not who he said he was, but again, it still left me with even more questions as to what he was actually doing with Clare. Was it to protect her from Jack, protect her from something else or to cause her harm? And why to every single one of those options.
I truly could not be more invested in what is happening to this family; it’s almost as if this tragedy is bringing them closer than what we saw in the first episode and repairing their alluded-to fractured relationships.
Although I have a feeling we will see them go the opposite way when the kids find out the truth about Jack, even if that isn’t until way down the line.
This episode definitely solidified the relationship dynamics between the family. Clare and Jane have a rivalry that is ultimately more competitive than them not liking each other; they actually seem to have a really good bond.
Mike and Junior have a little bit of distrust in each other down to having different morals, but again, their bond is pretty strong. Russell is everyone’s sounding board and the clear baby of the family who just wants to make sure that everyone is okay and gets on like they used to.
I feel like every audience member can relate to at least one member, if not more than one member of the Hollingsworth family, which is a big factor in why I love this show already.
The fact that we get some dramatic irony with the audience being the only ones that know Jack is still alive is so captivating. Especially since Jane and Mike truly think that he is dead. However, even the audience don’t know his motives, which makes it all the more intriguing; we truly don’t know if Jack is trying to protect his family or if he is trying to harm them. Or if he is just focussed on a danger to Clare or to the whole family. It’s such an exquisite storyline.
I think having Mike and Junior have this tension where they both know that the other is hiding something is so great to watch. Junior clearly wants the approval of his father, regardless of whether or not he wants to admit it. However, currently, matters of the heart are stopping him from being able to be honest with Mike. I truly think that Junior and Sydney do have a really deep connection, but they just can’t risk it getting out. I don’t think it’s just a fling for either of them.
I find it quite interesting that Mike seems a lot happier that he is no longer retiring. He really didn’t seem best pleased at the start of the last episode, but in this episode, he seemed a lot more relaxed, despite being under a lot more pressure. Clearly, this whole family thrives well under pressure and doesn’t really know what to do when it isn’t there.
I truly cannot wait to see what is in store for the rest of the season. So many questions to be answered, and I’m sure many of them will be left unanswered for a long time. I love it!
