James Blunt, Idris Elba, Guy Ritchie & Sir Ian McKellan all own pubs around London, and now another celeb has thrown their hat into the ring. According to The Times, actor and former James Bond, Daniel Craig, is trading MI6 for EC1 and taking over The Horseshoe in Clerkenwell.
And he’s doing it with sidekicks to rival Miss Moneypenny and Q. Soho House founder Nick Jones is coming in hot from the opening of St. Clement for his first pub venture, while Charlie Carroll, founder of Flat Iron and part of the team behind The Devonshire, is overseeing the food. Apparently the bottom floor will be focused on snacks, while a restaurant upstairs will serve a larger menu.
Craig comes from a family of publicans – his dad ran a pub in Cheshire and his grandparents owned one in the middle of Chester – so he really does have a licence to swill. But he may want to keep his wits about him, as the outgoing landlady, Pauline Tucker, claims the site is haunted. She says Gilbert the ghost, the local hangman from the old days, still lurks in the cellar.
This marks yet another hyped spot for the area, which recently became home to one of London’s buzziest new openings, The Horses, and will soon welcome The Poet, and B.Penhale from the Camille team.
